Rwanda Visa Guide

The Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration is the primary source for Rwanda visa rules. Its V1 holiday-visitor category can be issued on arrival, online, at an immigration office, or through a Rwandan diplomatic mission. Other purposes of travel have their own categories.

For V1, the page requires a travel document valid for at least six months and lists US $50 for single entry or US $70 for multiple entry where fees apply. Single-entry validity is 30 days and multiple-entry validity is 90 days; work is not permitted. Visa-waiver arrangements include African Union, Commonwealth, and La Francophonie countries, so check your passport’s entitlement before budgeting a fee.

For many visitors, the practical planning question is not whether a Rwanda trip is possible, but whether the cleanest route is visa on arrival, online application, or a pre-arrival check tied to passport nationality and routing. The official immigration site and current embassy or consular guidance should be treated as the final word, not travel forums or recycled agency posts.

The U.S. State Department page is useful as a secondary check because it summarizes arrival expectations, passport-validity guidance, and where travelers are directed for official immigration updates.

Visa clarity affects flight timing, buffer nights in Kigali, and whether you feel comfortable booking fixed-date wildlife activities. Settle the entry pathway first, then lock your park sequencing and domestic timing around that.

Rwanda Biomedical Centre’s notice dated 16 June 2026 says foreign nationals who have travelled through or transited the DRC in the previous 30 days are denied entry. It distinguishes Rwandan nationals and foreign residents with valid residency, who may enter but face mandatory quarantine under the health protocols when that travel history applies.

FCDO’s September entry guidance still points travellers to this notice. Check the latest RBC measures and your airline’s requirements before departure, especially after a DRC visit or transit; having a visa does not settle this separate entry condition.
