Visit Rwanda describes two rainy seasons: mid-February to May and mid-September to mid-December. It identifies June to mid-September as the main dry season, with occasional light rain. The shorter planning window around mid-December to mid-February falls between those rainy periods; it is not a guarantee of dry trails.

Those dry windows matter most when steep forest trails, transfer comfort, and route predictability are the priorities. They matter less if you are comfortable with occasional rain and are building a slower scenic trip rather than a tight one-park sprint.

Gorilla tracking in Volcanoes can happen year-round, but dry periods are typically easier for steep trail conditions and transfer reliability. Akagera is more about overall comfort and wildlife visibility. Nyungwe is where wetter periods are felt most clearly because forest walks and canopy experiences are such a big part of the trip.

Choose the driest window if you want the smoothest first Rwanda trip. Choose shoulder or greener months if your dates are fixed and you are more concerned with overall trip design than textbook-perfect trail conditions. The bigger mistake is not a wet month; it is trying to force too many regions into too few days.
